船貨崇拜
歷史
最為知名的貨物崇拜〔本處註：即船貨崇拜〕，是萬那杜塔納島的「約翰·弗魯姆教」（John Frum Movement）[3]。第二次世界大戰太平洋戰爭時，美軍於塔納島建立一臨時基地。當時島上的原住民看見美軍於「大鐵船」（軍艦）內出來，皆覺得十分驚訝；他們也看到，有一些「大鐵鳥」（軍用飛機）運送穿著美軍軍服的人及許多物資。這些原住民看見這種情況均感到很驚訝，並覺得這些「大鐵船」及「大鐵鳥」十分厲害。加上美軍也提供部分物資給原住民[4][5][6]，而這些物資對原住民來說十分有用，結果這些原住民將美軍當作神。
二次世界大戰結束後，美軍離開塔納島，只留下一些美軍軍服及一些貨物。塔納島原住民便認為這些貨物具有神奇力量，又相信「神」（美軍）他日會回來並帶來更多貨物，使他們展開一個幸福新時代[7][8]。但是美軍當然再也沒有回來塔納島，因此這些原住民便自己發展出一套敬拜儀式，崇拜美軍軍服及貨物[9]；表現形式是原住民會穿著美軍軍服、升起美國國旗，圖騰則是木刻的飛機。一般把這個新興宗教稱為「約翰·弗魯姆教」。
由於國內主流意識形態（中國特色社會主義）對「商品拜物教」（資本主義）和真正意義上的宗教皆有所排斥，但建制派意識形態層層疊疊（課程思政中，少話）讓民眾難以理解，民眾就只得跳過「學四史、守初心」這種高強度學習，草草用「XX崇拜」等概念暗諷對方經濟地位由於自身原因過低（還不是你（們）不努力），這就使得「船貨崇拜」這一詞也會用來主要暗諷對方像南島人一樣經濟地位奇低且又缺乏自由。
批判
由於該術語將過於多樣化的運動混為一談，[ 4 ]且帶有貶義，因此在人類學研究中，該術語的使用有所減少。 [ 5 ]

(The term "cargo cult" is widely used negatively as a metaphor outside anthropology. Usage often relates to the ideas of desire (particularly for wealth and material goods) and relatedly consumerism and capitalism, ritual action and the expectation of rational results from irrational means.[25] Richard Feynman used the term to describe situations where people focus on superficial aspects of a process without understanding the underlying principles – he specifically cautioned against "cargo cult science", warning that adopting the appearances of scientific investigation without a self-critical attitude will fail to produce reliable results.[26]: 338 "Cargo cult programming" was popularized as computing slang to describe the inclusion of code that serves no purpose in a program, indicating a lack of understanding of the program structure by the programmer.[27] Lindstrom noted in 2013 that users of the term have stretched the definition to such a degree that it has become a general pejorative for "almost anything that some critic depreciates".[28])
