由于部分媒体的宣传不明，当佩洛西使用此话评价香港事务时就遭到了美国国内的一些人士抵制与批评，这次共青团中央反讽引用此话亦被翻车，有评论认为：“把阵营摆在基本的价值面前，人命便成了冷冰冰的较量。但凡对生命有一丁点的尊重，也不会说出这种话。 ” 可见各国政客们为了互怼不惜幸灾乐祸，而夹在中间最惨的则是在骚乱城市下艰难生存的人民。但也有人为共青团中央的微博小编鸣不平，说“共青团中央小编做了什么让网友如此悲愤？他把美国对中国香港说的话重复了一遍 。 ”
