该剧经常因为触及忌讳话题（如种族歧视、宗教伦理、厕所幽默、同性恋等）、不尊重保守者的感情（如对主角父母的描写）、把宗教人物描绘成漫画形象恶搞（如对一座阴部流血的圣母玛利亚的雕像的描写、在日德兰邮报穆罕默德漫画事件期间播放的穆罕默德形象、对耶稣和基督教的描写以及指责山达基教只不过是“一个全球骗局”而已）而广受争议，并受到了一些批评（如讥讽伊斯兰教被穆斯林革命网站恐吓、被指责对孩子的民主造成了威胁）。当该剧最初热播时，好几所学校禁止学生穿着与《南方公园》有关的T恤。但其剧在英国第四频道的“100部最好的卡通片”票选中高居第三，也在“50部最好的喜剧电影”中名列第五。
2019年10月3日，美国成人卡通南方公园播放第23季第2集中国乐队，剧集中提及主角Stan乐团为了打入中国市场而要面对中国的和谐 ，而其父亲则因将大麻入境中国而被关进集中营，体会到集中营的种种恶行。因为该集涉及多种敏感话题：中国资讯审查、劳动改造、第十四世达赖喇嘛、亲共商人及小熊维尼，结果于国内所有的影视网站将此集全线下架，“南方公园”的百度百科词条、贴吧、豆瓣页面、知乎页面、bilibili上的相关视频被禁止访问，百度等搜索引擎、新浪微博和微信公号等各种社交媒体均禁止搜索和讨论所有“南方公园”相关话题。由「
